Composer Of The Month – Feb 2015

Felix Mendelssohn Felix MendelssohnBorn: February 3, 1809, Hamburg, Germany
Died: November 4, 1847, Leipzig, Germany

Felix Mendelssohn was probably the second greatest prodigy in classical music after Mozart.  He wrote 12 string symphonies while still in his early teens and he was one of the most popular composers of the Romantic period.  Among his most well-known works are his music for ‘A Midsummer’s Night Dream’ (from which the Wedding March comes from), the series of ‘Songs Without Words’ for piano, and the Christmas carol, ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’. We also have to thank Mendelssohn for reviving interest in the music of the great J. S. Bach.  He actively performed and promoted works by Bach and was responsible for erecting a memorial to Bach in Leipzig, Germany.

Term 1 2015 (2 Feb to 28 Mar)

We welcome back students to the studio and to another year of making music. This term, we begin the 40 Piece Challenge which aims to have students learn and master 40 piano pieces in year. While only the older ones took part in the challenge last year, everyone including the youngest beginner, are encouraged to participate this time.

The other programme we have for this year is the Composer of the Month series. In 2014, many students enjoyed learning about the various genres of music (from Romantic to Rock and Roll) in the Music of the Month series. We hope they will have as much fun getting to know various composers from across different genres and periods of music.
